For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve...

Mark 10:45

Putting our faith into action is at the very heart of our Christian calling

This Month:

Current and Ongoing

At LUMC we believe that serving God and our community can take many forms. Here are just a few ways we endeavor to give back to our community.

Winter Nights

Seasonal - Yearly
Once a year our church serves as host to Winter Nights. Our congregation opens their doors and their arms, to shelter, feed and support homeless families in Contra Costa. Lafayette UMC and congregations from various faith traditions house homeless families at churches on a rotating basis. Congregations also provide meals, activities for the children, and tutoring. Winter Nights provides professional staff for supervision during shelter hours, and daytime services such as job training and permanent housing placement assistance.

Canned Food Drive

Year Round
The congregation donates nonperishable items for distribution to emergency food programs. One-third of those served through these programs are children. You can find collection barrels in the back of the sanctuary year-round ready to receive your cans and non-expired dry goods on behalf of the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano

Heifer International

December through January - Yearly
Heifer International fights poverty and hunger around the world by providing animals to those in need along with training to foster self-sufficient farming. Moreover, the animal’s offspring are shared within the community. Thus, Heifer seeks not only to feed the hungry but to improve the standard of living of the entire community.

Angel Tree Giving

November through December - Yearly
Roughly 1,800 children are in the foster care system in Contra Costa County. Holidays can be particularly hard on children displaced from their homes and families. Donations make it possible to help support kids in foster care during the holidays.

PAST SERVICE PROJECTS

Gael Pantry

April 2024
LUMC collected food to help supplement Saint Mary's College Gael Pantry, a program designed to help combat food insecurity in our own backyard.

Diaper Drive

August - September 2023
Last August our student ministry collected diapers for the Bay Area Crisis Nursery.  Each year the nursery gives out 80,000 diapers to families in need!

Backpack Drive

July 2023
We raised over 65 Backpacks for at-risk youths to be distributed through the Monument Crisis Center and Contra Costa Foster Friends

SHARE Food Pantry

2024
Through endowment grants we've supported modernizing their tech to better support resource access.
The SHARE Food Pantry, housed at FCC Concord's campus, is a non-profit organization staffed entirely by volunteers from the local community and funded by donations. For more information on how to donate or how to utilize SHARE's services, please contact this wonderful organization directly.
